Introduction to Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL)

Who is this course for?
Our non-accredited FREE Introduction to TESOL course is exactly what you are looking for if you

are:

  •   thinking about a career teaching English as a Second Language (ESOL) and would like to know more before investing in the formal teaching qualifications required to work in this sector
  •   already working as a volunteer ESOL teacher
  •   interested in becoming a volunteer ESOL teacher

    No teaching experience or qualifications are required to join this course, however, an interest in teaching English to speakers of other languages and some knowledge about this area of teaching is desirable.

    Applicants would need to have sufficient English language skills (level 2) to fully participate in the course.

    Please note: The online version of this course is delivered in real time and you will need to have a laptop or PC with web cam and an internet connection capable of handling interactive video calls and screen switching. More information on this will be available during the induction prior to the start of the course.

    What are the course aims?

  •   to give an outline of current approaches in English language teaching to adult learners
  •   to look at some specific methods and materials
  •   to help participants decide if they wish to make a career in ESOL teaching

    Will I gain any qualifications?

    There is no qualification at the end of this course, there will be information on opportunities for further training and employment in English Language Teaching. This course is to help you to decide whether teaching ESOL is for you.

    Course content – The programme includes:

  •   a beginner’s class in a foreign language
  •   language awareness: an introduction to grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation in
  •   the English Language Teaching context
  •   approaches to teaching literacy skills
  •   current approaches to language teaching
  •   classroom observation or video observation
  •   micro-teaching session
  •   English Language teaching materials
  •   using ICT in language teaching
