Thanks to its own vitality, traditional music has managed to survive through the centuries. Its modernity is constantly evolving across Europe, using both original traditions and new expressions from other countries, which are transferred to other social contexts through migration. As part of the identity of each region and as a universal language of art, traditional music is at the center of European attention, its deep roots in local culture, historical tradition, allow it to contribute to the development of cultural diversity, while its plasticity promotes dialogue between different cultures.
Balkantage 2.0 presents new musicians who create and affirm these discussions using new forms of traditional music as a means of promoting cultural diversity in Munich.
Imamović’s sevdah is a tradition that has been learned, researched and sung in the family for generations. One of the most famous modern sevdah singers, after World War II, was his grandfather Zaim Imamović. Despite, or better said, with such a tradition, Damir Imamović manages to separate himself from “classical sevdah” and reconciles traditional forms with popular ones, thus opening the door to a younger audience and awakening their interest in this type of music both in the country and internationally.
Damir Imamović’s “Singer of Tales” is a happy gathering. “Singer of Tales” shows an extraordinary respect for the source as well as for the innovation and mastery of the musical craft. For Damir Imamović, Sevdah is not just a songbook, but a collection of stories – and stories often have a longer lifespan than melodies.
