BH UK Network in cooperation with the associations “Otkrij bosanski” from Vienna and “Preservation of the Bosnian language and culture in Denmark” will hold an online seminar in April for teachers/teachers of Bosnian supplementary schools from Great Britain and Denmark.
In accordance with the current situation, the seminar will be held online via the Zoom application, 10. and April 11th from 10am to 2pm. We are proud of the fact that Bosnian supplementary schools in the UK have been operating continuously for over 25 years.
High-quality professional development and further education establish a very important aspect in lifelong learning, especially for the mother tongue and teaching of the Bosnian language. Unfortunately, there are very few offers outside the mother tongue. Namely, such offers are not even oriented towards the study of the Bosnian language in a multilingual society and are not adapted to an appropriate curriculum that would provide teachers with instructions and assistance in the implementation of teaching. It is precisely because of this need that the “Discover Bosnian” association was formed in Vienna, which, together with the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo, will offer the most modern seminars, following the latest methodological, didactic and linguistic needs of our teachers who teach mother tongue classes abroad.
The project objectives are:
• Acquisition of new scientific and professional knowledge in the field of linguistics (Norm of the Bosnian language) / contrastive analysis when learning the Bosnian language
• Adoption of modern methodological and didactic models in teaching languages and literature with a focus on the specific circumstances of learning languages and literature outside the mother tongue; the role of multilingualism in preserving the mother tongue, motivation as a driver for revitalizing the first language.
The lecturers of the seminar are: Prof. M.Sc. Azra Hodžić-Kadić, et al. Halid Bulic.
Azra Hodžić-Kadić is a professor of Bosnian and Croatian at the Sprachcentrum (Foreign Language Center) at the University of Vienna and also an employee of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in the Department of Minority Languages. She is also a doctoral candidate in Slavic Studies in Vienna. For more than ten years, she has been teaching and studying Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, French and German as a foreign language at various higher education institutions in Austria. Her areas of research are minority languages, multilingualism, the study of the Bosnian language in a multilingual society, and the role of mother tongues in the formation of a polycentric identity. She is the initiator of the introduction of the Bosnian language as a foreign language at the University of Vienna (an elective and study subject) and the initiator of the project “Otkrij bosanski – Entdecke Bosnisch – Discover Bosnian”, which is also a registered association in Vienna and aims to promote the Bosnian language and multilingualism abroad. The association aims to produce 4 textbooks of the same name and two grammar manuals. The first textbook has seen the light of day.
Halid Bulić is an associate professor at the Department of Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian Languages at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo. He is also the head of the faculty’s Center for Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian Languages at the Center for Scientific Research and Professional Activities. He received his PhD from the University of Sarajevo in 2013. He has published the scientific books From Morphology and Syntax of the Modern Bosnian Language (Slavic Committee, Sarajevo, 2011), Topics in Linguistic Bosnian Studies (Institute for Bosnian Language and Literature, Tuzla, 2016), Pragmatic aspects of the novel Ponornica by Skender Kulenović (Institute for Bosnian Language and Literature, Tuzla, 2018), Pragmatics (Bookline, Sarajevo, 2019, co-authored with Sabina Bakšić), a book of poetry Televizione (PrintCom, Tuzla, 2011), and over seventy scientific and professional papers. In 2017, he received the Hasan Kaimija Award for his book Topics in Linguistic Bosnian Studies , and the award for the best university textbook at the Sarajevo Book Fair in 2019 for his book Pragmatism . He has participated in several international scientific conferences and lectured at several European universities (Berlin, Poznan, Budapest, Graz). He is the president of the Institute for Bosnian Language and Literature in Tuzla and the editor of the language and literature magazine Lingvazin .
