From the moment they arrived in the UK, it was expected that many refugees from Bosnia and Herzegovina would suffer from post-traumatic stress. In addition, many felt nostalgia for their family, homeland, village, and house, whose fate was uncertain during the destruction of the war.
That’s how Meho Jakupović, who now lives in London, was looking for a way to cope with nostalgia more easily. How to get rid of that feeling of sadness and nostalgia? That feeling for what they once had and for those wonderful moments with dear family members in their homes. One day, after arriving on the Island, he decided to make models/Bosnian houses out of matches.
“Old Bosnian houses have a specific look and evoke wonderful memories.
I made both houses in the photos after arriving in the UK. They were made from matchsticks, based on memories of my late grandmother’s house (left). The second house was made based on memories of houses from Bosnian neighborhoods and alleys from the last century. This work was not only a hobby, but also therapy that made it easier to bear the nostalgia for my native homeland and homeland,” said Meho.
