Stories from exile – Rahima Hatić

Bosnian House Birmingham

During the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, people lost everything overnight. Property was destroyed by bombing or fire, stolen. There was no justice. Everything imaginable was stolen, money, jewelry, weapons, furniture, cultural heritage…

Rahima Hatić is one of the people who, during the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina, found a new life with her family in Great Britain. They came to find refuge and salvation. She could not bring anything to the new country. However, while fleeing, she managed to hide gold jewelry given to her by dear family members.

“This is the only gold I managed to bring to England when we escaped during the war. It is the only possession I have, everything else was burned and stolen. The necklace was a gift from my mother when I gave birth to my oldest son.

The ring is a gift from my sister who died during the war .

The other ring was a gift from my mother-in-law when I married her son.

The bracelet is the first engagement gift from my husband. The earrings are a gift from my other sister. The pearl ring was a gift from my brother-in-law.

This is the only thing I have of gold here with me and that binds me very much to my homeland Bosnia and Herzegovina and my dear family. Rahima said.
