The evening was attended by members of diverse communities across the UK’s central region, including the Mayor of Birmingham , Yvonne Mosquito , Deputy Lieutenant, Dr Nasir Awan MBE DL , and the Assistant Police and Crime Commissioner and Chancellor of the City of Coventry, Lynette Kelly . The event recognised the tireless efforts and commitment of all those who dedicate so much time to raising awareness of Srebrenica and using the lessons of the genocide to work to promote cohesion and combat hatred and intolerance in their communities.
On behalf of the host, BH UK Network, Dr. Anes Cerić welcomed the guests and thanked them for the organization’s continuous work, which
Mayor Mosquito said: “This year marks the 24th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica. We can learn important lessons from the Bosnian war, including the stories of the courage of individuals and groups who stand together to oppose hate. When one person stands up and speaks out against prejudice, they encourage others to follow. We are all responsible for finding common ground with others and seeking what brings our communities together. Thank you for inviting me here tonight, she was a privilege and an honor to share this event with you.”
Amil Khan , from “Remembering Srebrenica”, also addressed the guests. He explained the importance of their work and stated that they will continue to strive not to forget both the victims and the survivors who must continue to live. “Remembering Srebrenica” was founded in 2013 and is based in Birmingham, UK. So far, they have managed to educate more than 90,000 young British people about the genocide in Srebrenica, and have organized over 6,200 events in memory of the victims of the genocide. They also organized 1,200 British people to visit the Potočari memorial center.
Alma Aganović , Chair of the “Remembering Srebrenica” Committee for the West Midlands region, expressed gratitude for the enormous contribution of the many volunteers who have committed themselves to commemorating the genocide and thus contribute to ensuring that the crimes that occurred are never forgotten.
On this occasion, awards were also presented to Selma Bektić and Amina Mekić , former students of the Bosnian supplementary school in Birmingham, for their activities within the organization “Remembering Srebrenica” who dedicated their free time to telling the truth and educating others about the terrible crimes throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, it is not for nothing that it is said that the world rests on the young. These are seventeen-year-old Bosnian girls born in Great Britain whose parents fled from Bosnia and Herzegovina. They did not hide their delight at this gesture.
Those present also had the opportunity to watch the documentary “From Persecution to Doctorate”, a documentary about Dr. Emina Hadžiosmanović . Dr. Hadžiosmanović, winner of the “Young Woman of the Year” award, was a child when
Aida Houghton , presented a wonderful book to the BH UK Network, as a thank you for all their work for the BH community in Great Britain.
The dinner was spent in a pleasant, we can say, homely atmosphere with lots of laughter and good mood, and the fact that the plates were empty shows how delicious and beautifully arranged the food was. The atmosphere of the evening was greatly enriched by our youth and the performance of KUD “Mlados Bosne” from Birmingham under the watchful eye of Fahira Hasedžić .
We sincerely thank the ladies who responded and contributed to the dinner and socializing in a homely atmosphere.
