On the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, a lecture was held at Eden Girls School in Coventry.

In collaboration with Remembering Srebrenica, Bosnia UK Network and the local community of BHCA Coventry, the school reunion was attended by 120 students and teaching staff. Since the assembly hall cannot accommodate the 650 students who attend this school, the rest of them followed the lecture via video link in their classrooms.

On behalf of the local community of BHCA Coventry, Bosnia UK Network and Remembering Srebrenica, the attendees were addressed by Remzudin Alihodžić, Vice President of the World Federation of BiH Diaspora and a long-time activist of the BiH community in the UK. He used this opportunity to explain to the younger generation exactly where Bosnia and Herzegovina is located on the European map, that genocide was committed, as well as what genocide is, and how many victims it has, despite the declaration of Srebrenica as a UN safe zone and the engagement of UNPROFOR (UN Protection Force).

Remzudin is also shared his personal experience with the students of the school. He told the young people that peace, respect and tolerance between people are the most important bond, so that they would be much happier in the future and that the genocide must never be repeated, to anyone and anywhere in the world.

During the Week of Remembrance from July 4 to 11, the anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide was marked by holding nearly 1,000 activities in schools, city halls, police stations, mosques, synagogues, churches and community centers in cities across the country.

The International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia have ruled the crimes in Srebrenica as genocide, and the United Nations has described it as the “worst” crime on European soil since World War II.
