Dr. Justin Varney, Director of Public Health, based on the latest data in his recent report stated:
“The rate of new cases in Birmingham continues to increase, although part of this is due to increased testing, there has also been an increase in the percentage of positive tests, so this reflects the real increase in cases in the community.”
The highest rate of new cases was recorded in the age group of 30 to 39 years, followed by the age group of 40 to 49 years and 20 to 29 years, and the lowest was in the age group of 0 to 9 years and 70 to 79 years. The rate of cases is highest in Asian ethnic communities.
Hospitalizations have increased over the past month, and there has also been a small increase in people in intensive care or on oxygen due to Covid-19.
“The majority of identified contacts of confirmed cases are household members and household visitors, and we continue to see spread primarily through social mixing in private households.”
