The official launch of the historic project to establish a permanent Srebrenica memorial in one of Birmingham’s parks took place at Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham’s most visited park, welcoming more than two million visitors each year.

The symbolic ceremony marked the commencement of a landmark initiative led by Bosnia UK Network to create a permanent place of remembrance, reflection and education in one of the city’s most prominent public spaces. The memorial will honour the victims and survivors of the Srebrenica genocide while promoting peace, human rights and community cohesion for generations to come.

The launch formed part of the programme marking the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide and brought together civic leaders, representatives of Remembering Srebrenica, members of the Bosnian community and other distinguished guests. The ceremony was led by Dr Anes Cerić, Honorary Consul of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Midlands and Chief Executive of Bosnia and Herzegovina UK Network.

The project remains subject to planning permission, public consultation and all necessary statutory approvals. Once completed, the memorial will serve as a lasting reminder of the consequences of hatred and genocide, while celebrating Birmingham’s commitment to remembrance, education and community cohesion.
