BH UK Network opened the doors of the Bosnian House in Birmingham this school year for Syrian refugees, children who now have space for supplementary schooling in their native language.
Namely, using many years of experience in organizing BiH supplementary schools, BH UK Network organized the first supplementary school for Syrian refugees in Great Britain. The project is supported by the local authority of Birmingham.
Every weekend, more than a hundred Syrian children come to the premises of the Bosnian House. The interest of the students is great, so classes are held on Saturdays and Sundays. The new school year started at the beginning of September of the current year, it is optional and is taught by six teachers. It is certainly nice to see so many young ambassadors of Syria in the school desks in Bosanska House.
The enrolled children were divided into four groups, according to their level of proficiency in the Syrian language. We were impressed by their interest in connecting with their roots and how proud they were of their culture and heritage. To support teachers working with refugee children, BH UK Network provided them with materials that empowered them to work with children.
We were captivated by the students’ optimism. Despite all the hardships they faced, they were eager to explore and learn. Like all other children, these children have the right to access education in their native language. and we are proud that BH UK Network provided them with support in to that realization.
Bh. diaspora understands the problems of refugees and exiles, as a large number of them had this status upon arrival in the UK. We organized ourselves into Bosnian supplementary schools throughout Great Britain, and today we are those people who can help others and show the empathy and solidarity that we ourselves received when we needed it.
