Magnificent meeting of BiH supplementary schools in Great Britain: HE DOESN’T HAVE BOSNIA FOR ME…

Another gathering of Bosnian supplementary schools in the UK has taken place. We have entered the third decade of continuously holding such gatherings, which have already become a tradition. IMG 5736 225x300
It was no accident that I started with the words from Josip Pejakovic’s famous monodrama “He has no Bosnia for me.” For this occasion, I will tell my story and my impressions exactly in his style.
How painful it is when both old and young come to the BiH School Assembly, from the oldest to the youngest. Age is just a number, what matters is the soul and hearts that beat for the homeland.

How painful it is when everyone from Manchester, Birmingham, Coventry, and even further south to London and Hertford gather in one city. Kilometers are just a number and a geographical distance. Yet, every bird flies to its flock. And in this turbulent time and lack of time, all we need is a warm handshake, a smile, a pat on the shoulder.

How painful it is to not have Bosnia, when we manage to get together every year, sing songs and play carols, chat and chat a little. There are much fewer of us than in other countries, but we prove that it’s not all about numbers, but about intention and putting ideas into action.
IMG 5313 300x225How painful it is to miss Bosnia, when our national anthem is listened to, the language is told and songs are sung, verses of our famous poets are recited, Sevdalinka sing, folk costumes are worn and carts are played, and blue and yellow flags are waved and cheered at sports competitions.
Our soul is full of our dear Bosnia and Herzegovina, and we hope that this love will be strong enough for the hope of future generations.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the BiH organization in Derby for organizing this wonderful gathering. After reciting the Fatiha and a minute of silence for the victims of the Srebrenica genocide and a dignified remembrance through poetry, the program began. A beautifully designed program with an excellent script, children and young people who did a great job in the role of presenters, a beautiful presentation with many photos, an exhibition of art and literary works, the awarding of certificates of appreciation for participation to schools, the awarding of certificates of appreciation by the Ministry for Refugees and Displaced Persons, medals and sports trophies…
There are also excellent cultural and entertainment programs prepared by teachers and volunteers from all schools. Although the programs differed in scope and content, each child truly tried to do his best. We had everything, from songs dedicated to Bosnia and Herzegovina, to sevdalinka to a dramatic piece. I am sure that among these boys there are great talents, future actors, singers, dancers, poets, athletes, and above all honest people. IMG 5311 300x225
I would also like to mention the hostesses who made an effort to truly host us all, and the selection of food was excellent.
Since I like to quote our folk proverbs, I will say a few. “What you sow, you shall reap.” If we invest in our young generations and teach them our traditional values, we will not allow our language, culture, and customs to fall into oblivion.
Let our children grow up with the motto that “Knowledge is the best property”. With a developed awareness of their origins, they will know how to value their own and respect others.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the organizers in Derby, BH UK Network, the guests from Sarajevo, and all the schools in the UK who made this event a great success with their participation.

DERBY, THANK YOU FROM THE HEART!
