The Holocaust Remembrance Day and the Prevention of Crimes against Humanity is an international day of remembrance to remember all the victims of the Nazi regime during the Second World War. This day is celebrated all over Europe, and January 27 was chosen as the date of celebration. On this occasion, in the school premises of the Bosnian House in Birmingham, the present students, teachers and parents had the opportunity to watch the short documentary “Words to survive”. This film shows the testimonies of Helena Aronson, who survived the Holocaust, and Safet Vukalić, a survivor of the genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
After that, teachers Azra Bašić and Eldina Bolić held a workshop with students, trying to explain to them the meanings of the Holocaust and genocide, focusing in particular on the genocide in Srebrenica.
The main message of marking this day to the little ones is how important it is to familiarize themselves with everything that happened during World War II. World War and the 1990s in Bosnia and Herzegovina, when it was enough for someone to have the wrong religion, the wrong nationality or a different political opinion to end up in liquidation. So that history is not forgotten, and such tragedies are not repeated, it is important to pass on the memory of the victims to the younger generations, to try to understand the past in order to condemn any genocidal behavior.
