We recently heard in the media about Bosnian Amra, whose book The Cat I Never Named (#TheCatINeverNamed), selected as a finalist for the most prestigious literary award for the best true story book published in the US in 2020 for young adults.

Her book also found its way onto the shelves of the BH UK Network library, the umbrella organization of Bosnian and Herzegovinian associations in the United Kingdom.

The book soon became a bestseller on Amazon. Amra records her story of survivors in her memoir “The Cat I Didn’t Name”. In her story, the central character is a stray cat who has saved her life from time to time. The book is a true story of love, war and survival”, which tells about the horrors she survived

“On the first day of the war, my brother heard it in the back of our property. At the moment when he was walking towards the cat, a shell fell and killed the four girls who were standing with him. My brother and I survived, because we walked towards that cat,” Amra recounted her encounter with the cat.

Amra Šabić-El-Rayess, a professor at the famous Columbia University in New York, was born in Bihać and is proud of it. She had a very happy childhood in the city on the Una River, and now works all over the world as an educational consultant for the American and other governments that hire her to solve their educational problems.
