BH UK Network will again this year help the organizations Remembering Srebrenica and YMCA North Staffordshire, and the New Vic Borderlines Theatre from Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme to prepare activities for this year’s Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Week.
During the memorial week, several activities are planned, for the implementation of which we need your help . Your participation and support will help us mark the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide with honor, remembering the victims and paying tribute to the survivors:
- Online Exhibition – We are asking members of the BiH community in the UK and beyond to take part in this project. You can do this by sending us a picture or video (record landscape) of a personal item that connects you to the war or the period before the war. The item can represent a happy/unpleasant/unusual or war memory, a memory that will help people who did not experience the war to better understand BiH before, during and after the war. If you wish to remain anonymous, you will also have that option available to you. Due to the size of the item, if possible, please record a comment for us in both English and Bosnian.
- Bosnian Traditional Dishes Cooking Workshop – We would be delighted if a couple of housewives decided to participate in this workshop to film themselves making a dish. It would be even more interesting to do it in the presence of your daughter, granddaughter, friend, etc. This is just one example. Of course, it would be filmed in advance and already prepared for the memorial week. All the Britons who have had the opportunity to try Bosnian dishes so far have not only been delighted with the taste, but have often asked for the recipes. This would be an ideal opportunity to introduce them to some of the Bosnian specialties.
- Traditions and customs of BiH – let’s show the world some of our customs such as: crocheting, carpet weaving or carving… If you would like to show some of the old crafts that BiH is famous for, please record your work using your mobile phone (landscape – wide) and send it to us using the contact information below.
- Voice of Survivors – We would like to hear from you if you have survived ethnic cleansing/genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina, regardless of whether you have previously shared your experience or not. We need BiH citizens living in the UK to share their survival stories with all of us. Do not be ashamed of your past, because it is your inspiring stories that can help future generations. You can record your testimonies yourself using your phones, tablets, etc. (please use the landscape option) and send them to the addresses below. Due to the sensitivity of the topic, and for the sake of anonymity, if you wish, your testimonies can be translated into another medium in order to share your story while maintaining your privacy.
- We invite you to submit your views and suggestions on alternative ways to mark the 25th anniversary of the genocide. Your advice, opinions and suggestions will aim to improve these commemorations and in this way BiH citizens will participate and support the persistent and dedicated work of the BH UK Network and “Remembering Srebrenica”.
If you have an idea or plan to participate in the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial Week in one of the previous ways, please contact the following people:
