The Bosnian diaspora in the United Kingdom marked May 31 – White Armband Day – with a series of dignified and emotional events in cities across the country, recalling the crimes committed in Prijedor in 1992, including the murder of 3,176 civilians, including 102 children.
Organized by the BH Association in Coventry, the commemoration brought together a large number of community members, representatives of institutions and friends of BiH. A particularly emotional moment was the testimony of Benjamin Mulalić about the experience of his father Mehmed – a concentration camp inmate from Prijedor. The event was attended by the Mayor of Coventry Rachel Lancaster, the Ambassador of BiH to the UK Osman Topčagić, the founder of Remembering Srebrenica Dr. Waqar Azmi OBE, the President of the Bosnia UK Network Zaim Pašić, and representatives of youth and students who, through recitations and speeches, reminded of the importance of education and the culture of remembrance.

Children from the Bosnian-Herzegovinian School in Birmingham marked White Armband Day by raising a white flag and symbolically wearing white armbands, sending a strong message about the need to preserve truth and memory and pass them on to new generations.

In Derby and Hertfordshire, local Bosnian communities organised commemorative events to honour the innocent victims and send a message against forgetting and denial. In Hertfordshire, particular emphasis was placed on the importance of the white armbands as a symbol of segregation and a warning against discrimination.
Commemoration in London: Voice from the radio and white ribbons
A moving exhibition was held at the premises of the BiH Embassy in London, with speeches by Ambassador Osman Topčagić, Dr. Waqar Azmi, Ed Vulliamy, Imam Sedin ef. Šahman and survivors of the crimes from Prijedor. The artwork and poem by Lejla Kevrić particularly impressed those present, through the powerful symbolism of the white cloth, the rose and the silence of pain. This event once again reminded of the importance of truth in a time of growing denial.
This year, White Armband Day in the UK strongly connected communities, institutions and international friends of Bosnia and Herzegovina in a common goal – preserving memories, fighting denial and passing on the truth to future generations.
🕊️ Never again – anywhere and to no one.
