Bosnia and Herzegovina is a small country with rich and diverse dishes. The diversity and traditionality of Bosnian cuisine certainly make it a special and very interesting culinary entity. It has become a tradition, a symbol of identity and an essential part of Bosnian collective memory. It plays an important role in the cultural identification of the people.
Every year, especially on the eve of the commemoration of the genocide in Srebrenica, let us remember all that we have lost, the innocent victims and their grieving families. During the exile and when arriving in new countries, completely unknown destinations, we had to integrate and learn a new life. We adopted new laws, customs, and cultural skills of other countries.
But one thing is certain. Many Bosnian and Herzegovinian women outside of Bosnia and Herzegovina have continued to prepare traditional dishes and thus preserve our culinary tradition. Recently, a family from Birmingham, originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina, recorded a cute video during the month of Ramadan. The video features three different generations, grandmother Enisa, mother Lejla and granddaughter Nejira. The video shows how our delicious recipes are passed down through the generations. In this way, they showed that cooking has continued to be a part of the culture of living in England.
Traditional dishes often hide beautiful stories.
