“Almira Delibegović-Broome QC will take on the role of Chair of the Scottish Judiciary (Justice), succeeding Shelagh McCall QC as Chair of the Scottish branch of the law reform charity,” it said.
Baroness Arminka Helic shared the news on Twitter. She congratulated her compatriot on her great achievement.
As explained, Justice has been “at the forefront of law reform in the United Kingdom since 1957, with the aim of promoting a fairer and more accessible justice system for all, by conducting research and generating practical, workable recommendations for reform”.
This institution was established in 2012, following the successful intervention in the case of Cadder v HM Advocate, and focuses on relevant issues within the Scottish justice system.
Justice Chief Executive, Fiona Rutherford, said: “I am incredibly pleased to welcome Almira Delibegović-Broome QC to Justice Scotland and look forward to working with her. Almira joins us at a time when we are increasing our work in Scotland, and her expertise and experience will be invaluable in generating long-lasting, systemic change within the Scottish legal system.”
“It is an honor and a privilege to take on the role of Chair of Justice Scotland. Defending the rule of law is more important than ever. I look forward to working with our membership and building on the work of my distinguished predecessors, so that the justice system works fairly and efficiently for all,” Delibegovic-Broome said in a statement.
The announcement of her appointment also stated that she “originates from Bosnia and Herzegovina, where her law studies were interrupted due to the war.”
“She holds an LLB (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh and an LLM from Harvard, where she was a Fulbright Scholar. She has acted in numerous public law cases over the years and was a resident advisor to HM Revenue and Customs from 2012 to 2015. Almira is a board member of the charity Remember Srebrenica (Scotland), a member of the Business Committee of the University of Edinburgh’s General Council, an independent non-executive on the Supervisory Board of Deloitte UK and on its Audit Governance Committee, and a member of the Accountants in Bankruptcy Advisory Board.”
