Bosnian diaspora calls on UK government to include lessons from Srebrenica genocide in national curriculum

BH UK Network has sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Rishi Sunak, thanking him for his help in passing the UN Resolution on Srebrenica. We also request that, in accordance with the content of the Resolution, the lessons of the Srebrenica genocide be included in the national curriculum so that future generations are educated about the consequences and prevention of genocide.

The letter stated the following:

We are grateful to the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland for its co-sponsorship and vote in favour of the UN Resolution on Srebrenica. The adoption of the resolution is of great significance to the survivors and families not only of the Srebrenica genocide, but also to those who experienced mass atrocities throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The adopted resolution condemns “any attempt to deny the genocide in Srebrenica and encourages every effort to bring the perpetrators to justice”. This is a provision that calls on all countries to fulfil their obligations under the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. We are proud to see that the United Kingdom is resolute in its responsibility to prevent further victimisation of survivors and their families through denial. This is a clear sign of support for Bosnia and Herzegovina in facilitating reconciliation and stability in the region. The adoption of the resolution also sends a clear message to the whole world that genocide cannot and will not go unpunished. In these current times, such a message is of particular importance.

After the adoption of the resolution, we ask the United Kingdom to include the lessons of the genocide in Srebrenica in the national curriculum so that future generations will be educated about the consequences and prevention of genocide. This would be a step towards building stronger and more cohesive societies for all.

As July 11 approaches and we prepare to mark the twenty-ninth anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, we know with great satisfaction that the international community recognizes the pain and suffering experienced and will be with us as we mark the first International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica.

We thank you unreservedly for your continued support.
