Online lectures by Dr. Dina Mehmedbegović-Smith at the Faculty of Education, University of Bihać

During December 2020 and January 2021, as part of the knowledge transfer program from the diaspora in BiH, Dr. Dina Mehmedbegović-Smith, who teaches at the Institute of Education, University College London, will hold five online lectures to students of the Faculty of Education, University of Bihać, as part of the ”Diaspora for Development” (D4D) project – a project of the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Government of Switzerland in partnership with UNDP and IOM.

Lectures will be held at the times listed below:

  • Insight into London as a Global City: Challenges for the Educational Context and Educators 09.12.2020. at 16.00 h;
  • Engaging with Linguistic Diversity in Global Cities: Advocating for “Language Without Hierarchy” Policy and Practice in Education 14. 12. 2020. at 4:00 p.m.;
  • Developing intercultural skills: Autobiographical approaches for children and adults 13.01.2021. at 4:00 p.m.;
  • Language maintenance in the diaspora: Parents as the strongest or weakest link 20.01.2021. at 4:00 p.m.; and
  • Examples of good practices from schools in the UK: Focus on diversity 27.01.2021. at 16.00.

Research by Dr. Mehmedbegović-Smith concern bilingualism / multilingualism, minority languages ​​and the positioning of languages ​​in relation to dominance, political power and the disappearance of languages. He is currently developing interdisciplinary work with neuroscience colleagues with the aim of providing broader evidence to support the cognitive benefits of bilingualism in education and lifelong learning. Her concept “Healthy Linguistic Nutrition” is an innovative approach to language learning, as well as her autobiographical approach to developing intercultural skills.
