SARAJEVO, (Patria) – Organized by the non-governmental organization AntiDayton, photographs of 3,176 Prijedor residents killed during the ethnic cleansing of the 1990s, including 102 children, have been placed in the Great Park in Sarajevo.
Volunteers handed out white ribbons to passers-by, which they put around their arms in memory of those killed.
White Armband Day, May 31st, is a symbolic date declared in memory of more than 3,000 murdered residents of the Prijedor region. It is celebrated in Bosnia and Herzegovina and numerous European cities.
On that day, in 1992, Bosnian Serb authorities ordered the non-Serb population to wear white armbands and hang white sheets on their houses and apartments.
This is how the invitation sent by Radio Prijedor on May 31, 1992 read:
“Citizens of Serbian nationality, join your army and police in the pursuit of extremists. Other citizens, Muslim and Croat, must hang white flags on their houses and apartments and wear white armbands. Otherwise, they will suffer severe consequences.”
International White Ribbon Day in Prijedor is celebrated with a peaceful walk through the streets of Prijedor.
According to data from the “Prijedor ’92” Association, 3,176 Prijedor residents have been registered so far who were killed or disappeared during the war, mostly civilians, mostly Bosniaks, then Croats, while Roma, Albanians and some Serbs were also killed. Among the victims were 256 women and 102 children.
